equal ranking

is it possible to make the spec filters equally ranked so you can select any one fromt eh drop down first rather than only in a set order.

You could use checkboxes instead of dropdowns. We have setting about this in Plugins -> Nop Ajax Filters -> Settings. There you will find setting called Filters UI Mode. Just change it to Use Checkboxes and save your configuration.

Sorry my bad. The above answer is for the AjaxFilters.
Unfortunately in AjaxFilters Pro you could not have equal ranking for filter options.
